R E N E F A R I A S
I am a Cuban artist living in Miami
I like to explore the human eroticism and break taboos and stereotypes. There is no better way to assert ideas than through art.
Mermaids, minotaurs, fairies, snakes, butterflies; recurring elements in my work that serve to accentuate the contrast between masculine
strength and the fragility and delicacy
that nature and mythology offer us.
Let’s start with your story, we would like to know about your journey has been so far and hear how you got started.
I am a Cuban artist born in Havana. Since I was little, I was always interested in art, but it was not until 2017 that I began to dedicate myself to it professionally.
What is something you had to put off because of the pandemic that you have recently done or is on your list to do soon?
The pandemic was really what made me start working with watercolor. It was a totally new medium for me and having a lot of free time in confinement, I decided to start exploring it.
What does your art future hold for you?
I am open to exploring new forms of expression. I don’t have a defined path; I think artists get carried away by the moment and are constantly changing… like a mental metarmophysis
Artists are always bombarded by how great it is to pursue their passion etc., but we know from a lot of people that it is not always that easy. Overall, would you say things have gotten better for you as an artist in South Florida?
I think Florida has given me great opportunities, the people here are more open to the vision of art, and much closer. He likes to provide opportunities, especially to young artists who are starting out. I wish it were like this everywhere. There are very good artists around the world who just need that hand to guide them. And I found it in Florida, and I can’t talk about this without mentioning Dennis Dean and all the wonderful artists I’ve met in his space.
As you know I am impressed with your work, tell our readers more for example. What are you most proud of, and what sets you apart from others?
I am very proud of my roots, and how I try to mix them in my work. I try to find a balance between the erotic, the beautiful, the grotesque and the delicate. I believe that my works are small stories, micro-stories that each viewer reads internally in a different way.
How do you keep motivated:
I try to create every day; I consider it as a mental and manual exercise. I believe that the best way to improve as an artist is constant practice and knowing that today I made a stroke or a brushstroke better than yesterday motivates me to sit down and work. The feedback received by the spectators also has a lot of influence, it encourages you to pick up a brush and think about how this new piece will be interpreted by them.
Name a famous artist that inspires you and one not yet famous artist you would like the readers to know about.
My work is definitely greatly influenced by Caravaggio and Norman Rockwell.
The dark and theatrical nature of one and the customs and humor of the other make a mix that is irresistible to me
Is there a current or upcoming show or exhibit you want to let people know about?
I have an upcoming show July 27 at Gaythering hotel in Miami Beach. From 6 to 11 pm. I will be there with 2 others wonderful artists. I also have a solo exhibit at Wilton Art Works Gallery and Studios in August that I am very excited about.
What inspires you to be an artist and what inspiration can you pass on to others?
I think what inspires me the most about being an artist is the possibility of creating a whole alternative world, where you can escape when necessary. And I think that’s something that inspires others as well.
How are you giving back to your community?
I always take advantage of any space within my work to support my Cuban community. I think it’s the least we artists can do. Give visibility to what is happening, the conditions in which my brothers live, and, supported by my art… ask for Freedom.
Let’s end with a fun fact about you.
Fun fact about me? I always paint in underwear. And.. I don’t trust people who like frogs.
